Parenting is the process of promoting and supporting the development of physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of children from infancy to adulthood. Parenting refers to the activity of raising a child than a biological relationship.

In the case of humans, this is usually done by the biological parents of the child in question, although governments and society have a role as well. In many cases, children orphaned or abandoned children receive parental care from non-parent blood relations. Others may be adopted, through foster care or orphanages placed.

The purpose of human parents are discussed. Usually, parental figures provide the physical needs of children, protecting them from damage, and contribute skills and cultural values, until they reach legal adulthood, usually after adolescence. Among non-human species, parents are usually less lengthy and complicated, all young mammals tend to nurture them extensively. Levels of parental investment in their offspring largely inversely proportional to the number of offspring the average adult in the species produces.
